Augustus Waters

And how are you feeling?
Oh, I'm grand.

Gah. Okay, I promised myself I wouldn't draw any art from The Fault in Our Stars, by the author John Green. I PROMISED. These characters and this story and this situation in this novel are all too complex to put into a drawing. I decided as soon as I got into the story that these characters were just too big and too deep for me to ever draw.
And yet, I couldn't stop myself. It started off as an attempt to draw another horse or something actually, but I kept doodling faces instead. And eventually it was just a solid page of one face, of one boy, in a bunch of different poses and expressions and angles. Finally I realized that I had been drawing Augustus Waters the whole time. This type of art is always the most fun for the artist, because it's like the inspiration just takes you over and you don't even have to try really hard to get your vision down. I probably couldn't do Hazel, because she's even more complex than Augustus. What I liked so much in this book was how honest and vulnerable the characters were, especially Gus. You can really see his transformation throughout the story, and it's beautifully written, even if it breaks your heart. I feel like Hazel's transformation isn't complete yet, so I don't have a concrete view of her in my mind yet, which is why I don't want to draw her. I can tell that I'm going to be thinking a lot about Augustus and Hazel for the next few days.
I used aggressively bright colors, because they just seemed to match everything nicely. I really, really liked this book. A lot. I highly recommend it to anyone.
